Custom app or dSupport idea?

I came across this image years ago but the memory haunts me. It's just a concept but I've wracked my brain trying to figure out how to make this work but I totally lack the programming skills.

I don't get it, what are you trying to make work? I love these images though, especially "something else is wrong"

The headline from the link is "HD Icons That Self-report Problems". The idea would be to have diagnostics run quietly behind the scenes and then report themselves on either the My Computer icon or the C: drive icon. This, I think, would be a viable alternative to leaving a free version of dSupport on a system. While explaining this to my son, the idea of a desktop Gadget came to mind for a bigger, clearer icon.
